How Environment Affects Our Sleep

How environment affects our sleep:

1. In order to enjoy a restful night’s sleep your bedroom needs to be the right temperature 

Studies have shown that the optimal temperature which human beings need in order to enjoy a restful night’s sleep is a temperature between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. As if your body is too hot or too cold, you’ll find it extremely difficult to get to sleep as your body will keep trying to regulate its temperature, instead of being able to drift off to sleep. 

2. If light streams into your room, your body will also find it difficult to drift off to sleep 

If you find that light streams into your bedroom in the mornings and that you tend to wake up as soon as light enters your bedroom, it’s well worth getting blackout curtains fitted as they will prevent any light from entering your bedroom, until you’re ready to wake up and get out of bed. 

Why is light entering your bedroom such a problem? The simple answer is that the human body is designed to wake up at first light, so your body will naturally start to wake up as soon as first light enters your bedroom. 

3. If your bed is uncomfortable, you’ll also find it hard to enjoy a peaceful, restful night’s sleep 

In order to maximize your chances of being able to sleep for 7-9 hours per night, it’s well worth making sure that your bed is a comfortable place to spend 8 hours per night. If your bed isn’t comfortable and you often find yourself tossing and turning all night long and often struggle to get comfortable and fall asleep, you may want to consider purchasing a new mattress or a brand new memory foam mattress topper. Both of which will increase the quality of your sleep significantly and help you if you have any back pain or discomfort. 

4. You need a quiet environment in order to get to sleep 

In order to enjoy a peaceful night of uninterrupted sleep, it’s definitely worth making sure that you’re able to sleep in a calm, quiet environment. As human beings are designed to be alerted to noises at night and you’ll find it difficult to get to sleep and to stay asleep if you’re constantly alerted by loud, annoying noises.

If you live in an area where your neighbors often make a lot of noise, it’s definitely well worth investing in a high-quality pair of noise-canceling headphones. Which will make it far easier to enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

5. Having a TV or smartphone in your bedroom will make getting to sleep far harder

Electronic devices such as TVs, smartphones, and laptops are stimulants which will make it hard for your brain to wind down and fall asleep, so it’s well worth removing all electronic devices from your bedroom.

So if you want to increase your chances of enjoying peaceful, tranquil sleep, it’s well worth following the five tips listed above in order to make sure that your environment aids restful sleep.
